Which SSL certificate should you choose?

We are often asked which SSL certificate  to choose. Indeed, there are over 150 different SSL certificates available today. However, if you consider the specifics of your website and the information in this article, the choice will be much easier. SSL certificates differ in their support for certain types of domains, as well as in their advanced features and, of course, their price.

We recommend using the certificates described below if you only need the function of encrypting transmitted data, but do not need to confirm the level of your business. If you need to confirm the business status of your company, you should purchase a certificate with a green bar. “SSL with a green bar” or Extended Validation SSL is a certificate with extended company verification.

For example, Certum Premium EV SSL guarantees the highest level of information encryption. With it, the connection between the client’s browser and the website is secure, and the website address bar is highlighted in green. This way, users will always trust your website as much as possible, because they understand that all data is reliably protected.

Website with a single domain and a Latin name

Any certificate will work here. Certum Commercial SSL is a universal and reliable solution. Another advantage of the Certum SSL certificate is the speed of issuance. No documents are required to obtain it. However, please also pay attention to the features of the certificates listed on our website.

Your website is on a Cyrillic domain

You need certificates marked “IDN Support” (Internationalized Domain Names). These are usually certificates from Certum, Comodo or Symantec. IDN SSL certificates are usually more expensive than regular ones.

You have many subdomains

If your website has many other subdomains, you need to get a Wildcard certificate. For example, the Certum Commercial SSL WildCard certificate is a fast, affordable, and widely used protection for small online stores and startups. It confirms the authenticity of the root domain address and all its subdomains.

Free versions of certificates do not support Wildcard. And if, along with subdomains, you also have a Cyrillic domain, only certificates from Certum will work.

Financial guarantees

The cost often depends heavily on the financial guarantees provided by the certification center. For example, InstantSSL differs from InstantSSL Premium only in that the latter provides a guarantee of $250,000 (compared to $50,000). Most often, these guarantees are only required by financial institutions.
